Climate change and escaping ornamentals: Predicting the next generation of European plant invaders [WhoIsNext]

The main objectives of this project are to delimitate which ornamental plant species might naturalize and become invasive under future climatic conditions and where these next invasions will happen.


The consortium of four research groups (i.e. partners) will combine modelling with experimental studies to assess which ornamental herbaceous plant species are most likely to become invasive, and which habitats and regions of Europe are most likely to be affected by these invasions, with ongoing climate change.
The results of the project will allow assessment and mitigation of future invasion risks by screening potential invasiveness of ornamentals, and by identifying regions and ecosystems at risk, under scenarios of future climate. The findings will be actively communicated to policy makers and other relevant stakeholders, such as the horticultural-plant industry.
